Mary Rose Brown serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for NuStar Energy L.P.,which is one of the largest pipeline operators and the second largest independent liquids terminal operator in the nation.

Brown oversees the company’s Corporate Communications, Government Relations, Human Resources, Corporate Services, Strategic Sourcing and Aviation departments.  She has helped build the company’s reputation as an industry leader with an unwavering commitment to safety, environmental excellence and community service.  Just as importantly, she has helped establish a culture in which employees are considered the company’s No. 1 asset, resulting in NuStar being ranked No. 18 on FORTUNE’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work for and being recognized as a top employer by the San Antonio Express-News and Texas Monthly magazine.

Prior to transferring to NuStar in 2007, Brown served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications for Valero Energy Corporation.  She joined Valero in 1997 as Vice President of Public Relations, and was subsequently promoted to Vice President of Corporate Communications and named an officer of the company.  As a member of Valero’s senior management team, she played an important role in the company’s growth from a regional energy company in 1997 to the largest petroleum refining and marketing company in North America, with approximately 22,000 employees and annual revenues of over $90 billion. 

Previously, Brown served as Vice President of Public Relations for The Atkins Agency, which during her tenure was one of the most successful public relations and marketing firms in South Texas.  During her 14 years with Atkins, Brown directed public relations campaigns for a wide variety of clients, including Valero, the City of San Antonio, Broadway National Bank, Waste Management, Friedrich Air Conditioning, Ernst & Young, Hard Rock Cafe and other local, regional and national accounts.

During her career, Brown has earned countless honors, including receiving the  Executive Award for Large Business from the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce as part of their Tribute to Women Business Leaders, and being inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame for her many professional and personal achievements.  She also has been honored with the Outstanding Texas PR Practitioner Award from the Texas Public Relations Association (TPRA), the Women’s Leadership Award from the San Antonio Business Journal, the Angel of the Shelter Award from the San Antonio Children’s Shelter, the Corporate Friend of Youth Award from San Antonio Youth and the Outstanding Philanthropist by Make-A-Wish. 

Under her leadership, Valero was recognized with TPRA’s Lone Star Award, which recognizes one company each year that exemplifies excellence in public relations.  Additionally, Brown’s work has earned her more than 20 Silver Spur and Best of Texas awards from TPRA, and the prestigious Silver Anvil Award, one of the Public Relations Society of America’s highest national honors. 

A dedicated volunteer, Brown has donated much of her time to charitable and civic causes, most recently providing several years of pro bono work for Haven for Hope, San Antonio’s unique homeless transformational center.  She also serves as a board member of The Center for Health Care Services, the Texas Business Hall of Fame, the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way of San Antonio and the San Antonio Parks Foundation.  And she serves on the executive committees of the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas board and the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame board.  She previously served as a trustee of Our Lady of The Lake University and a member of the Marketing Advisory Committee for the United Way of San Antonio.  Additionally, she is a past president of the San Antonio chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and a long-time member of both TPRA and PRSA.

Brown holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas State University and serves as a member of the University’s Advisory Council for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
